A day at the Gym

I was at the gym today and I for some reason I thought back to the questionnaire they asked me to fill out when I joined.  They wanted to know why I joined the gym: Was it to loose weight, build muscle, train for an marathon, ect.  I left it blank because I didn’t join for any of those reasons. Maybe I’m odd as it doesn’t dawn of me when I eat the cherry pie for breakfast how many calories it is and that would equate to another x number of additional minutes on the treadmill.  And I personally have no interest in training for a marathon or any other type of athletic endeavor. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying I don’t enjoy participating in charity runs like the Bridge to Bridge, but I see no reason to train for them. To me I see them as an excuse to spend the day in the city with my Girlfriend. And why ruin a leisure 5k walk. Isn’t the whole point of a charity run in SF is to start the day with a brisk walk together catching up?  And to loose weight, I couldn’t possibly burn enough calories in a work out to make it worth it. I rather eat healthy and have a leisure work out. It was funny, my roommate came back last night from the gym and said she had an ok work out. I was like, what other kind of work out do you have? I don’t know about you, but going to the gym isn’t on list of top 10 things that excite me. I do it because you’re supposed to exercise, but I don’t do it for enjoyment. I used to use the stair stepper ever day for 30min to an hour. It wasn’t because I loved it, I did it because it gave me an excuse to watch tv and not feel like such a couch potato.  I used to be into bodybuilding. I really wanted to achieve one of those amazing ripped bodies, but after a few years diligently working at it and training with a professional bodybuilder I gave up. I just couldn’t consume all of the calories I needed and I learned that you have to be born with a certain body type to get the results I wanted and that just wasn’t what God gave me. Don’t get me wrong I did develop some nice muscles, but not what I pictured.

So, why do I go to the gym? Because that is what healthy people do and it gives me something healthy for me to fill my day with. And maybe it will help me so my back and body doesn’t ache so much.  I’ve only got one body so I’d better take care of it.
